A painterly installation by Steven Aalders, entitled View, is on display at the Van Gogh Museum from January 24 to June 1, 2020, and due to temporarily closure now extended until September 6, 2020. Inspired by Van Gogh's The Harvest (1888) Aalders made a layered oil painting in two vertical equally divided planes of colour, golden yellow and sky blue. For Aalders, these are the colours of van Gogh. For the installation at the museum Aalders hanged the painting in the centre of a brickstone red painted plane on the wall. For this, Aalders is inspired by a fragment in a leter by Van Gogh, in which he explains, he tested this Harvest painting at home by lying it down on the red stone floor, to see if the painting was as 'real' as the surrounding floor.

Steven Aalders, Mondriaanhuis, Amersfoort: 20 September – 29 November 2009

Steven Aalders, Place (Black, Brown, Beige, Grey & Ash), Mondriaanhuis, Amersfoort, September 20 until November 29, 2009

Steven Aalders has written: On a cold clear Sunday morning in January 1983 I attended the Mass in the new church of the abbey St. Benedictusberg at Mamelis near Maastricht. The design is from monk/architect Dom Hans van der Laan and is of an impressive austere beauty. Afterwards Dom van der Laan told about his theory of the plastic number. His philosophy about the ‘straightening’ of nature made a deep impression. In a timeless manner and with minimal means an architecture was created, where space itself was the subject.

About twenty years ago I heart the music of Morton Feldman for the first time. Since then I have listened for many hours to his calm sounds, while working in the studio. Feldmans’ compositions are of a great restraint emotion, without big movements, with small shifts. Like he says himself, you can listen to it like you look to patterns on a oriental rug. Likewise in this repetition and variation have been used too. Feldman was inspired by the painting of his time. His long lasting works of sometimes four or five hours are a sounding of the large formats of the American Abstract Expressionist painters, but also of Minimal Art.

The exhibition in the Mondrian House is an installation, in which each of the five separate spaces have been furnished as a room with a piece of furniture of Dom van der Laan and one of my paintings from a recent series of five works with a permutation of five colours. That series is entitled Place (Black, Brown, Beige, Grey and Ash). The five colours refer to the austere use of colour of the Benedictine monk Dom van der Laan and in number with the five string instruments of Feldmans’ Violin and String Quartet from 1985. This two hour lasting piece sounds from a tape in space. It is performed by the Ives Ensemble.
