Slewe Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition with new works on paper by Joris Geurts and Ronald Noorman. It opens Saturday April 15 and will run until May 20, 2023.
Joris Geurts, who is known for his lyric abstract paintings, drawings and prints, has focused more on making work on paper in the last ten years. They are made with acrylic paint, diluted with plenty of water, applied with broad brushstrokes on various sizes of sheets of paper. These water colors are transparant layered and traceable. Deep purple blues, grays and yellow green colors giving associations with the kosmos or landscape. In this exhibition he will show a new series of works on paper.
Geurts, born in Oss (NL) in 1958, studied at the AKI in Enschede. After his study he started his career at Art & Project Gallery in Amsterdam in the early eighties. Since 1995 he shows at Slewe Gallery on a regular base. In addition to his painting practice he also works as a composer of music. His works have been collected by several important public collections, such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede, Noordbrabants Museum, Den Bosch and corporate art collections of AkzoNobel, ABNAMRO, KPN, BPD and AEGON amongst others.
Work by Ronald Noorman, who passed away five years ago, will be shown for the first time at Slewe Gallery. Noorman’s oeuvre consists of works on paper and prints. His drawings, mostly in black and white, are characterized by simple forms. They are expressive in execution and have an intimate scale. For the spectator it is exciting to follow the artist’s hand in the traces of charcoal, gouache, pastel, ink and pencil. On show will be a selection of his last works on paper in which color plays a more prominent role.
Noorman (1951–2018) lived and worked in Amsterdam. After his study at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam he only devoted himself to drawing. His works are internationally exhibited and collected, such as Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Teylers Museum, Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem, Museum Folkwang Essen and Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich amongst others.
